AI-generated religious videos have stirred confusion and debate on social media, especially among millions of Christians in developing countries. In recent years, advancements in generative AI have significantly improved the quality of such content, making it difficult for those who don’t scrutinize closely to distinguish between real and fabricated media. This has led to the spread of disinformation and propaganda.
For example, a Facebook account recently posted a video (https://www.facebook.com/reel/1120343906557864) showing what appeared to be Pope Francis in conversation with a Baphomet-like figure. The video has caused widespread confusion within the Christian community. It is just one of many fake religious videos circulating on social media, like this one shared on X (formerly Twitter) (https://x.com/DailyLoud/status/1650199796089585667).

Using video analysis tools like InVid WeVerify, Factjaja separated the keyframes of the video and performed a reverse image search on Microsoft Bing. This analysis confirmed that the video was AI-generated using DeepFaceLab, a deepfake creation tool.
Factjaja has thoroughly reviewed the Facebook post containing the video of Pope Francis and has determined that it is FALSE.
This fact-check is part of an ongoing series by Factjaja, aimed at investigating and debunking content flagged as potential misinformation on Facebook and other social media platforms.
